Missanabie is located at the end of Highway 651 on the CPR line west of Chapleau.

There is a small permanent population in Missinabie of about 40 or so. There is a post office, nurse station, consolidated school (French/English), and a General Store/restaurant. Since the closure of the Renabie Gold Mines, tourism is the mainstay of their economy, where its population soars to a seasonal high of 100-125. It was first founded as a railway station in 1886 and was once a Cree village.

Historical sites include the original Hudson Bay Post, which was built in 1886 and is the last of its kind in Northern Eastern Ontario. Also of interest is the Cree Anglican Church, a testament to the work of Reverend Sanders who is also buried in the nearby Protestant cemetary, the old hotel was a converted and extended storehouse for the Hudson's Bay Company and the train station which stood across the tracks, altered little since its construction, and torn down in the 1980's.

While this community is not a ghost town, it does have several abandoned buildings that are quite interesting.
